Ί ³ ³Ί Album : After The War Label : Virgin Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί In the early 80's, versatile guitarist Garry Ί ³ ³Ί Moore began cranking out a series hard rocking Ί ³ ³Ί albums that established the Irishman as a Ί ³ ³Ί respected guitar hero in the genre. He was also Ί ³ ³Ί something of a crusader, making nuclear war the Ί ³ ³Ί subject of several songs during the Reagan Ί ³ ³Ί years. Perhaps Moore's best all around album in Ί ³ ³Ί the 80's was Wild Frontier, released in 1987. Ί ³ ³Ί The songs were full of emotion, the production Ί ³ ³Ί excellent, and the musicianship outstanding, as Ί ³ ³Ί Moore's fiery guitar playing was tempered with a Ί ³ ³Ί more bluesy vibe, backed by keyboards. With Ί ³ ³Ί Moore's singing under control and conveying more Ί ³ ³Ί feeling, Wild Frontier was one of the best Ί ³ ³Ί melodic hard rock albums of the late 80's. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Moore's follow up, After the War, released in Ί ³ ³Ί 1989, is similar to Wild Frontier from a Ί ³ ³Ί production and sound standpoint. Although there Ί ³ ³Ί are some great tracks, overall the material is a Ί ³ ³Ί mixed musical bag, lacking the cohesiveness of Ί ³ ³Ί Wild Frontier. This time around, Moore seems to Ί ³ ³Ί be interested in lightening things up a bit. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Speak For Yourself, is an incredible power Ί ³ ³Ί rocker, with some incendiary guitar work that Ί ³ ³Ί ranks among Moore's very best. Running From the Ί ³ ³Ί Storm is melodic, and has the impact of a gale Ί ³ ³Ί force wind, with more great lead work. The title Ί ³ ³Ί track, After the War, is a catchy tune with Ί ³ ³Ί great vocals with a familiar antiwar message. Ί ³ ³Ί Incorporating traditional Celtic melodies is Ί ³ ³Ί something that both Moore and Thin Lizzy had Ί ³ ³Ί done before, and it works quite well on the dark Ί ³ ³Ί and brooding, Blood and Emeralds. Originally a Ί ³ ³Ί bonus track, Moore's impressive cover of blues Ί ³ ³Ί master Roy Buchanan's instrumental, Messiah Will Ί ³ ³Ί Come Again, adds more dark favors to the mix. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The ultra syrupy Livin' on Dreams, is pure pop Ί ³ ³Ί rock, and is kind of new territory for the Ί ³ ³Ί usually feisty Irishman. Moore's aggressive, raw Ί ³ ³Ί style of singing featured on This Thing Called Ί ³ ³Ί Love is kind of a throwback to his early 80's Ί ³ ³Ί style. A change of pace number that does kind of Ί ³ ³Ί work, is the bouncy Ready for Love, which after Ί ³ ³Ί another over the top guitar solo, brings in some Ί ³ ³Ί soulful female background vocals. Led Clones, Ί ³ ³Ί features Ozzy Osbourne singing on a Kashmir Ί ³ ³Ί influenced track, about bands borrowing from Led Ί ³ ³Ί Zeppelin. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The musicians are hard rock heavyweights. Ί ³ ³Ί Bassist Bob Daisley (Ozzy Osbourne/Rainbow/Uriah Ί ³ ³Ί Heep), and keyboard player Neil Carter (UFO), Ί ³ ³Ί return after having also played on Wild Ί ³ ³Ί Frontier. Also contributing are Don Airey Ί ³ ³Ί (Rainbow/MSG/Whitesnake) on keyboards, and Cozy Ί ³ ³Ί Powell (MSG/Jeff Beck/Black Sabbath/Rainbow) and Ί ³ ³Ί Simon Phillips (Toto/MSG/Judas Priest) on drums. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Gary Moore seems to be exploring some new Ί ³ ³Ί musical directions on After the War, the results Ί ³ ³Ί being a somewhat uneven album. His creative lead Ί ³ ³Ί work is at times completely off the charts, but Ί ³ ³Ί a great solo doesn't always make for a great Ί ³ ³Ί song. Perhaps Moore had grown weary of the heavy Ί ³ ³Ί metal genre, as he would turn to the blues next. Ί ³ ³Ί After this would come Still Got the Blues, the Ί ³ ³Ί first in a long string of blues albums the Ί ³ ³Ί guitarist would record in the 90's and beyond.
