You Ί ³ ³Ί order the steak, probably even the T-bone and Ί ³ ³Ί its plate is nice, the side dish is decent, a Ί ³ ³Ί green salad or some something healthy like that Ί ³ ³Ί (if you're on a date, if not, it's of course the Ί ³ ³Ί fries, you fat slob). The steak looks nice, the Ί ³ ³Ί exterior has a nice color and its smell is OK Ί ³ ³Ί but the taste, man, it's way too fat and the Ί ³ ³Ί inside is way too bloody. There's also an Ί ³ ³Ί unnecessary amount of melted cheese on it for Ί ³ ³Ί some unfathomable reason. The cook is Ί ³ ³Ί experimenting and failing at it. Not everything Ί ³ ³Ί you decide to mix together can be glorious. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Volbeat is that steak, they're indeed a very Ί ³ ³Ί original band and I need to give them some Ί ³ ³Ί credit for their inventive formula. Their Ί ³ ³Ί artistic approach is not without merits and Ί ³ ³Ί their intent is noble, well I do think so. Ί ³ ³Ί Unfortunately, as one of Denmark's most well Ί ³ ³Ί known bands, they totally missed the opportunity Ί ³ ³Ί to follow Mercyful Fate into the depths of metal Ί ³ ³Ί hell (Denner, Shermann and King Diamond are all Ί ³ ³Ί guests on the record, this reminds me of Ί ³ ³Ί Metallica Orion's festival, they seem totally Ί ³ ³Ί disconnected of what metal is in 2013). But why Ί ³ ³Ί Volbeat missed their boat? Because they fucking Ί ³ ³Ί suck, that's why. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί On their fifth album, the band expands its more Ί ³ ³Ί than catchy side. They always had these soft Ί ³ ³Ί songs but I feel it's a bit more prevalent here. Ί ³ ³Ί It's not necessarily a bad thing since they're Ί ³ ³Ί not better at being heavy or soft, they're Ί ³ ³Ί pretty mediocre at both. Volbeat is mixing the Ί ³ ³Ί alternative era of Metallica with a fair mix of Ί ³ ³Ί rockabilly, country, blues, pop rock, punk and Ί ³ ³Ί folk with their usual heavy/groove sound. The Ί ³ ³Ί amalgamation of genres is simply too much to Ί ³ ³Ί handle. It doesn't even sound good on paper and Ί ³ ³Ί it's an awful novelty in its execution. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί From sugary FM ballads like “Cape of our Hero” Ί ³ ³Ί (hell, Chad Kroeger wrote a better song on the Ί ³ ³Ί Spiderman soundtrack) to lead infused groove Ί ³ ³Ί (Rob Caggiano, an ex member of Anthrax, he's Ί ³ ³Ί pretty decent). There's acoustic and clean Ί ³ ³Ί guitars and all the stuff that can make a good Ί ³ ³Ί song. I probably wouldn't change the radio Ί ³ ³Ί channel if I were to find it, but hey I don't Ί ³ ³Ί listen to the radio because, frankly, it blows. Ί ³ ³Ί Volbeat is easy, simple and they don't try hard Ί ³ ³Ί enough. Not as heavy as their early stuff, the Ί ³ ³Ί band still thinks it's metal enough with tracks Ί ³ ³Ί like “Room 24” with King Diamond or “Dead But Ί ³ ³Ί Rising”. The metal ruler of Denmark really Ί ³ ³Ί destroys Michael Poulsen on this track, well it Ί ³ ³Ί wasn't quite hard since I think he's a terrible Ί ³ ³Ί vocalist and the main flaw of their sound. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί His pitiful deep southern approach is really Ί ³ ³Ί grating on my nerves. He kills the band for me Ί ³ ³Ί since their formula is very vocally focused. His Ί ³ ³Ί mix of modern day “Yeaaaaah!” James Hetfield and Ί ³ ³Ί cock charmer Elvis Presley impersonator is like Ί ³ ³Ί a slap of bad taste on my face. Even though his Ί ³ ³Ί voice is powerful, his delivery and the sound of Ί ³ ³Ί his voice annoys me deeply. Nonetheless, he's Ί ³ ³Ί charismatic and it fits their Americana approach Ί ³ ³Ί but I wonder how a David Eugene Edwards (16 Ί ³ ³Ί Horsepower & Wovenhand) would sound in a metal Ί ³ ³Ί band. At least he can write decent noir and pulp Ί ³ ³Ί inspired lyrics but after five albums, the theme Ί ³ ³Ί is getting a bit redundant. I get it, you like Ί ³ ³Ί leather jackets, fedoras and you love milkshakes Ί ³ ³Ί and you go to conventions dressed as James Dean. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί While I reckon the band successfully played Ί ³ ³Ί their cards during their whole career, their Ί ³ ³Ί flaws are just too important for me to Ί ³ ³Ί thoroughly enjoy them. Believe me, I tried and I Ί ³ ³Ί enjoyed Guitar Guitars & Cadillacs Blood back in Ί ³ ³Ί the day. Quite catchy (well, it's needed since Ί ³ ³Ί their songwriting is hardly a subtle affair). Ί ³ ³Ί They seem honest and hardworking but their Ί ³ ³Ί approach is simply something I can't get behind. Ί ³ ³Ί Both the form (14 songs, that's just way too Ί ³ ³Ί much) and the mix of styles that makes the band Ί ³ ³Ί undeniably cheesy and predictable. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Most of the songs have good parts but they're Ί ³ ³Ί rarely good all the way through except perhaps Ί ³ ³Ί the two last tracks, both excellent. I enjoy the Ί ³ ³Ί beginnings of most tracks like “Black Bart” with Ί ³ ³Ί its punky overture but the aforementioned vocals Ί ³ ³Ί ruined the track once again. Many tracks have Ί ³ ³Ί this western approach like “Lonesome Rider” with Ί ³ ³Ί a female guest vocalist. It probably would be a Ί ³ ³Ί hit on CMT if it was advertised enough and Ί ³ ³Ί honestly, it's not bad. What is bad though is Ί ³ ³Ί the fact all their sound are not completely Ί ³ ³Ί combined with each others. You can hear an Ί ³ ³Ί acoustic intro, some harmonica but then, it Ί ³ ³Ί changes and they forget their western influences Ί ³ ³Ί for the rest of the song. Sometimes they Ί ³ ³Ί remember and play a ten seconds of clean country Ί ³ ³Ί guitars just to be cool. I'd like to hear a good Ί ³ ³Ί mix of metal and country since Volbeat can't Ί ³ ³Ί hardly mix them. I don't quite remember the Ί ³ ³Ί amount of different influences in their early Ί ³ ³Ί albums but I have better things to than to go Ί ³ ³Ί back and listen to them like eating BBQed shrimp Ί ³ ³Ί and trashing Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Some good moments here and there but the vocals Ί ³ ³Ί are simply too obnoxious to deal with. The band Ί ³ ³Ί has good solos, sometimes even hints of Ί ³ ³Ί Megadeth's melodic thrash leads. I just don't Ί ³ ³Ί care for their music even though it's emotional Ί ³ ³Ί and catchy. If you already liked Volbeat before, Ί ³ ³Ί you'll certainly like their latest album even if Ί ³ ³Ί it's wimpier than their previous releases. Ί ³ ³Ί They're certainly still terrible and not worth Ί ³ ³Ί your time. Have you ever met a Volbeat fan? Ί ³ ³Ί They're as rare as Foo Fighters but for some Ί ³ ³Ί reasons they're both popular and their albums Ί ³ ³Ί are gonna be good picks in low price bins.
