As the years º ³ ³º pass by, it is a near impossible task for º ³ ³º musicians of any genre to successfully balance º ³ ³º what made them successful in the past, with what º ³ ³º listeners want to hear at any given point in º ³ ³º time. For this reason, the artists that end up º ³ ³º lasting for the long haul are more often than º ³ ³º not, those who practically foresee the near º ³ ³º future and progress their sound. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Despite strong sales and a decent critical º ³ ³º reaction for 1992 album ‘Adrenalize’, English º ³ ³º quintet Def Leppard could see the writing on the º ³ ³º wall following that release. Their previous º ³ ³º metal/hard-rock sound had taken a left turn º ³ ³º towards popsville, a switch in direction that º ³ ³º appeared to be an incorrect one as grunge and º ³ ³º alt-rock bands began to gain mainstream appeal º ³ ³º and acclaim at the beginning of the 90s. It was º ³ ³º time to attempt to foresee the future and serve º ³ ³º up something different… And so we have Def º ³ ³º Leppard’s sixth full-length release; ‘Slang’. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Unfortunately, instead of choosing a direction º ³ ³º and going with it, the veteran Sheffield outfit º ³ ³º (alongside new co-producer Pete Woodroffe) º ³ ³º decide to throw absolutely everything at the º ³ ³º wall to see what sticks. That can be seen in the º ³ ³º first three tracks alone, as ‘Truth’ shows º ³ ³º industrial leanings, ‘Turn To Dust’ heavily uses º ³ ³º an Indian Sarangi, while the horrendous title º ³ ³º track (which was amazingly chosen as lead º ³ ³º single) is the band’s stab at nu-metal. In a º ³ ³º sense, some of the fortune telling was spot on, º ³ ³º since industrial and nu-metal were to gather º ³ ³º momentum as the decade progressed. However, the º ³ ³º delivery was anything but spot on, as these º ³ ³º areas were simply not Def Leppard’s specialties. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Thankfully, ‘Slang’ contains a solid and º ³ ³º workmanlike mid-album quartet of tracks which º ³ ³º make the album passable. 3rd single ‘All I Want º ³ ³º Is Everything’ is a mid-tempo radio-friendly cut º ³ ³º that is well-performed and contains lyrics that º ³ ³º will hit home for some. Meanwhile, 2nd single º ³ ³º ‘Work It Out’ is a darker subdued piece which º ³ ³º probably best exemplifies what Def Leppard were º ³ ³º aiming for on this album. Most notable on this º ³ ³º song is the fact that Rick Allen has reverted º ³ ³º back to more of an acoustic-sounding drum-kit, º ³ ³º as opposed to the very electronic sounding drums º ³ ³º of the previous two albums. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The album highlight is 4th single ‘Breathe A º ³ ³º Sigh’. Initially a super slow ballad, this º ³ ³º builds up momentum well and diverts away from º ³ ³º the power-ballad style of the bands past. º ³ ³º Instead, it chooses sparse instrumentation and º ³ ³º terrific vocal harmonies to make it a resounding º ³ ³º success. The following ‘Deliver Me’ is then a º ³ ³º strange cut that isn’t totally convincing, but º ³ ³º effectively uses the varying vocal styles of Joe º ³ ³º Elliott to good effect. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º While the final four tracks deliver a vast array º ³ ³º of this, that and the other which could º ³ ³º separately appeal to some listeners (for º ³ ³º instance, ‘Gift Of Flesh’ is the heaviest piece º ³ ³º here), the strength and quality of the songs º ³ ³º themselves are mediocre at best. That may be a º ³ ³º little harsh on atmospheric ballad ‘Blood Runs º ³ ³º Cold’, but the bottom line is that this album º ³ ³º simply doesn’t hold interest to the very end. º ³ ³º This is especially the case for the bland and º ³ ³º arguably downright bad final duo which take up º ³ ³º over ten minutes of time. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As the phrase suggests, there is often a fine º ³ ³º line between being brave and foolish. On º ³ ³º ‘Slang’, Def Leppard may have indeed crossed º ³ ³º that line as, in progressing outside of their º ³ ³º comfort zone, their limitations have become a º ³ ³º little too apparent. Things are not helped by º ³ ³º the fact that the band has taken an unfocused º ³ ³º approach in crafting their new sound, resulting º ³ ³º in a hit and miss affair that is predominantly º ³ ³º devoid of quality hooks.
