The first º ³ ³º Simpsons cartoons appeared on The Tracey Ullman º ³ ³º Show. NASA launched the last of America’s deep- º ³ ³º space probes, Ranger 3, piloted by Captain º ³ ³º William “Buck” Rogers. Starbucks began its º ³ ³º inexorable rise to global supremacy by opening º ³ ³º its first coffee shops outside of Seattle. And, º ³ ³º after three years of toil and tragedy, Def º ³ ³º Leppard released their eagerly awaited fourth º ³ ³º studio album, Hysteria, to critical acclaim and º ³ ³º commercial success, shifting 20 million albums º ³ ³º and spawning seven hit singles. One of these º ³ ³º facts is fictional, but which one?* º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Filmed in matter-of-fact, lacklustre fashion º ³ ³º over two nights during Def Leppard’s 11-date º ³ ³º residency at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel in 2012, º ³ ³º how much you enjoy Viva Hysteria - a concert º ³ ³º film where the band play their phenomenal º ³ ³º Hysteria album in its entirety, the set-list º ³ ³º matching the order the tracks appear on the º ³ ³º album - will depend entirely on whether or not º ³ ³º you’re a Def Leppard fan and how much their º ³ ³º classic album meant to you. I was 13 back in º ³ ³º 1987 and like most teenage boys in the Western º ³ ³º world I owned a copy. Once upon a time, before º ³ ³º grunge came along and ruined everything, when º ³ ³º heavy metal, backcombed hair and double denim º ³ ³º were cool, Def Leppard were rock gods ... GODS, º ³ ³º I TELL YOU! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Big, bold, bombastic, multilayered stadium rock, º ³ ³º Hysteria was their masterpiece, their Sistine º ³ ³º Chapel, a grandiose, epic, crowd pleaser. I º ³ ³º loved Hysteria, it was one of the formative º ³ ³º albums of my youth. I remember buying it, on º ³ ³º cassette, at my local Woolies, remember how it º ³ ³º took my breath away the first time I listened to º ³ ³º it, remember discussing it over illicit cans of º ³ ³º Schlitz with my friends, all of us equally º ³ ³º short-haired and spotty (it was the West of º ³ ³º Scotland after all). I probably haven’t listened º ³ ³º to the album more than half a dozen times in the º ³ ³º past two decades but 26 years and a lot of lost º ³ ³º hair, dashed hopes and broken dreams after its º ³ ³º release, sitting in the warm, womblike dark of º ³ ³º the cinema, as guitarist Phil Collen, stripped º ³ ³º to the waist emerges alone from the darkness, º ³ ³º playing the intro to first track Women, I felt º ³ ³º that same delicious thrill, the hairs rising on º ³ ³º the back of my neck as they did in 1987, the º ³ ³º fondly remembered scent of cider and black and º ³ ³º rock chick musk prickling my nostrils. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º It almost doesn’t matter that the band members º ³ ³º are now in their 50s, that lead singer Joe º ³ ³º Elliott now looks like Ellen DeGeneres when she º ³ ³º gets angry and ranty about teens being bullied, º ³ ³º that the muscular, sweaty Collen looks like º ³ ³º Jason Statham’s disreputable father or that the º ³ ³º rest of the band look a little like brickie drag º ³ ³º queens, when they play they’re still just a º ³ ³º bunch of working class boys from Sheffield, as º ³ ³º happy playing to three men and a dog in a º ³ ³º working men’s club in the North as they are º ³ ³º selling out Madison Square Garden, their º ³ ³º enthusiasm for the music that binds and fuels º ³ ³º them jumping from the screen. Which is lucky, as º ³ ³º there’s little else cinematic about Viva º ³ ³º Hysteria. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Static and safe, Viva Hysteria is purely an º ³ ³º anodyne concert film, better suited to VH1 or º ³ ³º BBC4 of a weekend than the cinema, the band’s º ³ ³º brand of bombastic rock needs a stadium to give º ³ ³º it room to breathe, the more intimate setting of º ³ ³º the Hard Rock (which is still a barn…) hemming º ³ ³º them in, constricting them. There’s a º ³ ³º workmanlike feel to the film as the boys rattle º ³ ³º through their seminal album in front of an arena º ³ ³º of middle aged, balding men, suicide blonde º ³ ³º MILFs and their curvy daughters, all rocking out º ³ ³º and throwing Devil’s horns (\m/ \m/) at the º ³ ³º cameras prowling the crowd. If you’re a fan, º ³ ³º you’ll love this film. But if you’re not, you º ³ ³º won’t even see it. Why would you? Which is a º ³ ³º shame; Leppard’s story is fascinating, the º ³ ³º quintessential rock’n’roll fable of highs and º ³ ³º lows, triumph and tragedy. When drummer Rick º ³ ³º Allen lost an arm in a horrific crash, the band º ³ ³º stuck by him, giving him the time and space to º ³ ³º recover and to learn to play with his feet and a º ³ ³º specially adapted kit. When guitarist Steve º ³ ³º Clark, the wild heart of the band, succumbed to º ³ ³º his addictions, they soldiered on. Viva Hysteria º ³ ³º was shot while guitarist Vivian Campbell º ³ ³º received chemotherapy for the cancer he’s º ³ ³º battling. There’s a great documentary waiting to º ³ ³º be made about the band; this isn’t it º ³ ³º unfortunately, though until it comes along we º ³ ³º have the Spinal Tap potential of the reality TV º ³ ³º show they purportedly shot in Vegas to look º ³ ³º forward to.
