It Ί ³ ³Ί assembles a high-quality, fairly balanced blend Ί ³ ³Ί of Def Leppard's finest power ballads and Ί ³ ³Ί rockers on one CD, give or take a few. In this Ί ³ ³Ί sense, it is the best choice for the many Ί ³ ³Ί listeners who probably only want to own one disc Ί ³ ³Ί from this important but far from album- Ί ³ ³Ί consistent pop metal band. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The task of compiling best-of collections for Ί ³ ³Ί music superstars certainly is not the most Ί ³ ³Ί enviable enterprise one could take on. After Ί ³ ³Ί all, fans will never all agree on the final Ί ³ ³Ί tally. Still, this particular collection commits Ί ³ ³Ί a cardinal but common mistake in overvaluing the Ί ³ ³Ί artist's most recent material and thereby Ί ³ ³Ί squeezing out essential tunes. I mean, who could Ί ³ ³Ί possibly argue that a song like "Have You Ever Ί ³ ³Ί Needed Someone So Bad?" trumps "Too Late for Ί ³ ³Ί Love." Ί ³ ³Ί Still, despite that particular flaw this Ί ³ ³Ί collection dips into Def Leppard's vault and Ί ³ ³Ί generally pulls out keepers. "Photograph" and Ί ³ ³Ί "Foolin'," two of the standout tracks from the Ί ³ ³Ί band's breakthrough album, Pyromania, are Ί ³ ³Ί thankfully and appropriately here. The near- Ί ³ ³Ί perfect ballad "Love Bites" and the title track Ί ³ ³Ί are the two best songs from Def Leppard's Ί ³ ³Ί masterpiece, Hysteria, and they're here as well. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Beyond that, this disc remains a solid if not Ί ³ ³Ί exceptional listen, cranking out the band's Ί ³ ³Ί essential rockers like "Animal" and "Rock of Ί ³ ³Ί Ages" and not scrimping on offerings from the Ί ³ ³Ί huge-selling Hysteria album. The key problem Ί ³ ³Ί with Vault is that it probably contains too many Ί ³ ³Ί songs given the selection scheme. After all, Ί ³ ³Ί while Def Leppard certainly qualifies as one of Ί ³ ³Ί the best hard rock, arena rock and pop metal Ί ³ ³Ί bands in rock music history, the band doesn't Ί ³ ³Ί hold up in quite the same way in a broader, less Ί ³ ³Ί genre-specific examination. Still, despite its Ί ³ ³Ί flaws, this CD delivers for its target audience Ί ³ ³Ί of casual fans of the group.
