The raspy º ³ ³º screams, percussive insanity and the battering º ³ ³º riffs of these disgruntled, ferocity-driven º ³ ³º youngsters from the industrial town of Essen º ³ ³º would prove to serve as an influence for a º ³ ³º legion of the bands followers across the world, º ³ ³º that would in turn further intensify and shatter º ³ ³º the artificial stylistic boundaries that had º ³ ³º been set in stone and give birth to furthermore º ³ ³º intrepid and adventurous styles such as death º ³ ³º and black metal. The innovators of these º ³ ³º aforementioned genres were looking for and º ³ ³º consequently developed even more radical music º ³ ³º in various parts of the world, having grown º ³ ³º tired of the conventional modes of action º ³ ³º already available in heavy metal, and one can º ³ ³º quite easily draw a line tracing it back to the º ³ ³º early musings of these German trailblazers, º ³ ³º alongside similar innovators of the era such as º ³ ³º Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Sodom, Destruction, º ³ ³º Possessed, Sepultura, Bathory and Slayer. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Having formed in 1982 as Tyrant, quickly º ³ ³º shifting to the moniker Tormentor, the band has º ³ ³º seen a varied career graph, starting with their º ³ ³º debut Endless Pain (1985), which was essentially º ³ ³º a rehashed speed-metal indulgence with a º ³ ³º blackened edge. The band truly made a torrential º ³ ³º entrance with 1986s seminal Pleasure to Kill, º ³ ³º deemed by many as the heaviest thrash album of º ³ ³º all time and widely known as one of three º ³ ³º releases that comprise of the infamous trio of º ³ ³º 1986, along with Slayer's 'Reign in Blood' and º ³ ³º Dark Angels Darkness Descends, all these º ³ ³º albums being characterized by a very relentless, º ³ ³º speed-driven and frenzied approach, which º ³ ³º brought a new touch of heaviness and brutality º ³ ³º to the genre at the time. Soon after, the bands º ³ ³º work up until the early 90s was characterized º ³ ³º by a new found ambitiousness, with the band º ³ ³º reaching for the stars as far as technical º ³ ³º dexterity, unique song-writing and thematic º ³ ³º intelligence was concerned. Thereafter, an º ³ ³º experimental phase saw the band dabbling in º ³ ³º groove and industrial elements alongside a slew º ³ ³º of line-up changes. Not surprisingly, this º ³ ³º didn't go down well with their long term fans, º ³ ³º but the dawn of the new millennium saw them º ³ ³º return to their classic thrash sound, albeit º ³ ³º with an audibly pulsating melodic twist, and has º ³ ³º characterized the bands sound to date, and the º ³ ³º current line-up seen on the DVD. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Dying Alive is the band's latest live DVD, º ³ ³º released via the bands long term record label, º ³ ³º Nuclear Blast Records and could be viewed as the º ³ ³º summation of the shows the band played in º ³ ³º support for their latest masterpiece, Phantom º ³ ³º Antichrist (2012), which won the band both º ³ ³º critical and fan acclaim. The show that was used º ³ ³º to record this live DVD was a gig in Oberhausen, º ³ ³º in the Ruhr area of Germany and a mere 13 KM º ³ ³º away from their hometown, Essen. The DVDs main º ³ ³º menu has a rather user-friendly interface that º ³ ³º is fairly simple to traverse through. The º ³ ³º graphics of this menu are in line with the cover º ³ ³º artwork of the DVD and is nothing short of vivid º ³ ³º and detailed, and truly reflects on the rounded º ³ ³º vision of the band. While the main DVD presents º ³ ³º the concert as a whole, there is also an option º ³ ³º to choose select songs to view, in addition to º ³ ³º other DVD bonus material such as the official º ³ ³º music videos for the albums singles - Phantom º ³ ³º Antichrist and Civilization Collapse, behind º ³ ³º the scene footage of the DVDs making, as well º ³ ³º as a generic settings function that serve to º ³ ³º adjust conventional particulars as per the º ³ ³º viewers preference. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Onto the actual live experience, I would first º ³ ³º like to say that I have had the pleasure of º ³ ³º seeing the band live, coincidentally in the very º ³ ³º same Phantom Antichrist support tour at the º ³ ³º Bangalore Open Air on June 16th, 2012; and mere º ³ ³º words cannot express the sheer intensity that º ³ ³º the band brings to a live setting. Lest I º ³ ³º digress into my own concert experience, the DVD º ³ ³º starts with Mars Mantra, an excellent choice º ³ ³º for an intro, which starts of as a somber dirge º ³ ³º that descends into epic rhythms and melodies º ³ ³º that serve to build up excitement for the º ³ ³º thrash-tastic assault that awaits the audience. º ³ ³º During this intro, lyrics across songs from the º ³ ³º album are projected on the stage curtain against º ³ ³º a backdrop of various paintings, which also have º ³ ³º a thematic consistency, with the paintings all º ³ ³º depict a variety of situations concerning war º ³ ³º and general disarray. The band invokes nothing º ³ ³º short of an adrenaline rush as the curtain drops º ³ ³º and the band kicks off with the anthemic º ³ ³º Phantom Antichrist, which bleeds directly into º ³ ³º From Flood into Fire. The set-list is fairly º ³ ³º diverse and touches upon every era of the band, º ³ ³º and is a rather accurate representation of an º ³ ³º average Kreator seltist. All the songs blend º ³ ³º with each other in a similarly seamless fashion. º ³ ³º However, it is fairly evident that the bands º ³ ³º set-list choice is skewed towards the promotion º ³ ³º of Phantom Antichrist, with five songs in all. º ³ ³º Save for the crowd favorite Phobia, the band º ³ ³º is seldom known to play songs from their º ³ ³º experimental era, and this is reflected in the º ³ ³º set-list choice on Dying Alive s well. Despite º ³ ³º some songs having been conceived almost two º ³ ³º decades apart, they fit flawlessly into the º ³ ³º bands set-list and there is no discernible º ³ ³º obstruction in the flow and congruency of the º ³ ³º set-list whatsoever. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The bands performance is nothing short of º ³ ³º fantastic, and the chemistry between the members º ³ ³º of the bands current line-up is akin to the º ³ ³º type of live harmoniousness seen during their º ³ ³º career peak in the late 80s and early 90s. The º ³ ³º axe duo comprising of Mille Petrozza and Sami º ³ ³º Yli-Sirniö produce riff after riff in an º ³ ³º effortless fashion. The interplay between the º ³ ³º two is nothing short of enthralling, and the º ³ ³º trade-offs in lead parts is beyond drool worthy. º ³ ³º Sami Yli-Sirniös performance cements his status º ³ ³º as a sorely underrated guitar virtuoso. His º ³ ³º guitar work is both technical and melodic, and º ³ ³º yet does not descend into mindless noodling and º ³ ³º also evokes and reinforces the mood of each º ³ ³º song. The precursory acoustic intro to United º ³ ³º in Hate is an excellent reflection of Sirniös º ³ ³º versatility and showcases an unseen, elegant º ³ ³º side of the band. Founding member Jürgen º ³ ³º Ventor Reil was often criticized for his º ³ ³º apparent sloppiness and overtly speed-driven º ³ ³º style of drumming in the early years of the º ³ ³º band, but this live DVD makes any such notions º ³ ³º invalid and his technical dexterity is a sight º ³ ³º to watch. As an aside, the calmness and composed º ³ ³º expression that Reil maintains while belting out º ³ ³º his tireless brand of mayhemic drumming is also º ³ ³º rather amusing. Christian Speesy Gieslers º ³ ³º bass is barely audible, but likely contributes º ³ ³º to the overall heaviness wholeness of the bands º ³ ³º sound. It must be said, however, that Kreator º ³ ³º has essentially been a band driven by the º ³ ³º distinctively ingenious and enjoyably esoteric º ³ ³º guitar work of Petrozza. However, a band devoid º ³ ³º of a bassist generally sounds thinner and more º ³ ³º sterile, and to that extent Gieslers presence º ³ ³º in the band is imperative, but not specifically º ³ ³º something that adds to the distinctiveness to º ³ ³º the dynamics of the band. Milles vocal delivery º ³ ³º has undoubtedly been subject to the º ³ ³º inevitability that is aging, but still manages º ³ ³º to retain the razor-sharp, raspy quality that º ³ ³º came to characterize his vindictive sonic º ³ ³º pillage. Petrozzas crowd interaction is genuine º ³ ³º and evocative in a powerful and invigorating º ³ ³º manner. Mille alternates between German and º ³ ³º English, commanding for mosh-pits, crowd º ³ ³º approval and the completion of lyrics in an º ³ ³º assertive manner. One of my favorite aspects of º ³ ³º the bands approach towards a live performance º ³ ³º is the manner in which they prolong the space º ³ ³º between two songs, by letting the feedback flow. º ³ ³º During these intervals, you can hear the crowd º ³ ³º chanting the bands name, and the general º ³ ³º tension that builds up during these intervals º ³ ³º effectively increase the level of excitement in º ³ ³º the arena. Thus, when the band finally starts º ³ ³º off with a new song, the crowd reaction is º ³ ³º extremely uproarious. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The quality of the footage in the DVD is very º ³ ³º high-quality, courtesy of the 24 cameras that º ³ ³º were placed in strategic positions to cover º ³ ³º every aspect of the show. Thus, the viewer º ³ ³º experiences every aspect of a Kreator live show, º ³ ³º and is shown footage of not only the band on- º ³ ³º stage, but also a panoramic view of the stadium, º ³ ³º close-up footage of various parts of the crowd, º ³ ³º the circle/mosh-pits (a specific mosh-pit camera º ³ ³º was set-up for the making of the DVD). The º ³ ³º conventional guitar cams are satisfactory, as º ³ ³º well. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º In essence, this is a must-have for any Kreator º ³ ³º fan, thrash metal enthusiast or live DVD º ³ ³º collector, and yet is also an excellent gateway º ³ ³º to newer fans who are looking to get into the º ³ ³º bands sound, as it chronicles and covers both º ³ ³º various eras of the bands creative musings º ³ ³º through its set-list, as well as the bands º ³ ³º sheer combative tenacity as a live force. The º ³ ³º band presents a monolithic, momentum-driven º ³ ³º performance with healthy doses of ruthlessness º ³ ³º and palpitating doses of sensible melody; and º ³ ³º merely reinforces its status as one of the º ³ ³º premier live acts of the genre, apart from its º ³ ³º position as one of the most influential yet º ³ ³º underplayed acts of heavy metal music. Apart º ³ ³º from the fact that this live show might not be º ³ ³º wholly universal in nature given the usage of º ³ ³º German during crowd interaction every now and º ³ ³º then, I truly cannot find any prominent flaws º ³ ³º apropos this DVD offering, and is in summation º ³ ³º and immensely gratifying experience. The band º ³ ³º seems to be in a very healthy place now, in º ³ ³º terms of its preferred stylistic mode, º ³ ³º creativity and popularity; and Dying Alive is º ³ ³º most certainly testament to that. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³º Release Tracklist º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÊÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ ³ ³ ³ ³ - CD1 [ ] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ 01 - Intro: Mars Mantra [01:25] ³ ³ 02 - Phantom Antichrist [04:35] ³ ³ 03 - From Flood To Fire [05:50] ³ ³ 04 - Enemy Of God [06:06] ³ ³ 05 - Phobia [03:31] ³ ³ 06 - Hordes of Chaos [05:18] ³ ³ 07 - Civilization Collapse [04:04] ³ ³ 08 - Voices Of The Dead [05:10] ³ ³ 09 - Extreme Agression [04:31] ³ ³ 10 - People Of The Lie [03:20] ³ ³ 11 - Death To The World [05:13] ³ ³ 12 - Coma Of Souls (Intro) [00:39] ³ ³ 13 - Endless Pain [03:28] ³ ³ 14 - Pleasure To Kill [04:14] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ - CD2 [ ] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ 01 - Intro 2 - The Patriarch [00:56] ³ ³ 02 - Violent Revolution [07:37] ³ ³ 03 - United In Hate [03:49] ³ ³ 04 - Betrayer [04:16] ³ ³ 05 - Flag Of Hate/Tormentor [07:17] ³ ³ 06 - Intro/The Pestilence (Bonus Track) [13:29] ³ ³ 07 - Amok Run (Bonus Track) [04:29] ³ ³ 08 - Demon Prince (Bonus Track) [05:30] ³ ³ 09 - When The Sun Burns Red (Bonus Track) [05:54] ³ ³ 10 - Warcurse (Bonus Track) [04:23] ³ ³ ³ ³ Total Length : [115:0] min ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³ º Greetings To: º ³ ³ ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ Too all people who contributes to make this ³ ³ archive of good music in a exceptional conditions ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³þ þ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
