I don’t have to hear the cries º ³ ³º from the “originators” who lament for “Savage º ³ ³º Poetry” or “Vain Glory Opera.” I was there too, º ³ ³º but along the way people seem to forget about º ³ ³º the “fun” side of heavy metal. It seems that if º ³ ³º you aren’t shoe gazing with a frown - looking º ³ ³º down at your guitar that you practice for 24/7 º ³ ³º and can miraculously perform material that sends º ³ ³º shivers through Yngwie Malmsteen’s astounding º ³ ³º ego - then you can't come to the cool party. º ³ ³º Sammet writes better songs and more infectious º ³ ³º melodies on “Space Police” than any other Edguy º ³ ³º album combined…and YOU. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º So does it shock anyone if I blatantly proclaim º ³ ³º that this Edguy album is as close to perfect as º ³ ³º Sammet has come, short of Avantasia? I can hear º ³ ³º shouts of “Mandrake” and “Hellfire Club” º ³ ³º alongside adjectives like “blasphemy” and º ³ ³º “lunatic.” No album in the history of Edguy has º ³ ³º dealt this much ferocity combined with comedy º ³ ³º since “Rocket Ride,” and that was half the album º ³ ³º this is. With very few cringing moments, “Space º ³ ³º Police” is the unwitting hit of 2014, and while º ³ ³º many are unlikely to get beyond Tobi’s sense of º ³ ³º humor, keep in mind that he does it consciously º ³ ³º and with flippant care for serious heads. It is º ³ ³º precisely this childlike approach that I º ³ ³º appreciate so much from the man...proving not º ³ ³º all great musicians and composers have to have º ³ ³º on their "serious face" to be deemed great. Look º ³ ³º at Devin Townsend - does anyone have more fun º ³ ³º than him? This is a musical genius as well. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º It isn't as if suddenly one day Sammet woke up º ³ ³º and decided to be a goofball. This type of º ³ ³º cartoonish act while boasting a total metallic º ³ ³º attack with a raging ego has been the modus º ³ ³º operandi for a long while now. But despite all º ³ ³º the complaints…everyone still comes out and to º ³ ³º see the shows and buy the albums, disguising º ³ ³º their inner child with outward disgust at the º ³ ³º risk of looking foolish to the cool crowd. But º ³ ³º there is a simple reason for this: the albums º ³ ³º are actually good. “The Age of the Joker” took a º ³ ³º lot of heat for being boring, trite, and devoid º ³ ³º of interest - calling for cries from the beloved º ³ ³º to stop the torrid pace of material for fear of º ³ ³º burnout. Sure, “Joker” took a bunch of spins and º ³ ³º maybe the songs were a bit lengthy for what they º ³ ³º are, but it still was a pretty great album. º ³ ³º Hopefully, with time it will be looked at º ³ ³º better. In difference, “Space Police” seems to º ³ ³º have closed the gaps and at many times goes º ³ ³º direct for the power metal jugular that the song º ³ ³º titles don’t seem to portray. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º “Sabre & Torch” is one of the most boasting and º ³ ³º blasting power metal anthems ever penned by º ³ ³º Sammet. Right after, juxtaposed, is a seemingly º ³ ³º “lighter” tune with a “poppy” keyboard that º ³ ³º unveils one of the coolest and most memorable º ³ ³º tracks on the album - the title track “Space º ³ ³º Police” (note the trolling joke revealed in the º ³ ³º lyrics: "What the shine of my ego looks like º ³ ³º from a distance...and what do they know about º ³ ³º me?"). Suddenly, the genius of the “Tobi-troll” º ³ ³º reveals himself, and ah-ha - he really did make º ³ ³º one of the greatest power metal albums! Now all º ³ ³º that’s left to piss off the lyric hounds - º ³ ³º people who cannot seem to get beyond silliness º ³ ³º to enjoy music for what it is. “Defenders of the º ³ ³º Crown” is another straight up power metal º ³ ³º crusher - a riff with a twist! “Love Tyger” may º ³ ³º be a sappy hard rock track - but it kills any º ³ ³º Steel Panther look-a-like. “The Realms of Baba º ³ ³º Yaga” is yet another galloping riff, in which º ³ ³º Sammet sounds strikingly like Bruce Dickinson º ³ ³º towards the end. Right about now you realize the º ³ ³º joke is on you. This is exactly what Sammet º ³ ³º trolled you about! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º “Rock Me Amadeus” is a hysterical rendition of º ³ ³º the Falco classic, with the best of the rest in º ³ ³º “Shadow Eaters” and the epic "Eternal Wayfarer," º ³ ³º which along with the ballad “Alone In Myself” º ³ ³º sounds very closely like Avantasia. "Alone In º ³ ³º Myself" is especially fooling, as I was certain º ³ ³º Magnum’s Bob Cately would start singing. And º ³ ³º what of “Do Me Like a Caveman?” Well, outside of º ³ ³º the joking title, the song is excellent. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Defying physics, Sammet continues to pump out º ³ ³º the material at both a dizzying pace and of the º ³ ³º highest quality. "Space Police" is one of the º ³ ³º most engaging and exciting albums to come from º ³ ³º Edguy in years. So please go ahead and scoff, º ³ ³º fire back comments to the undisputed king of º ³ ³º social media and give into your hatred….Tobi is º ³ ³º goading you to do it! Meanwhile, I'll have the º ³ ³º attendant add more butter to my popcorn as I º ³ ³º listen the latest adventures of the “Space º ³ ³º Police - Defenders of the Crown." º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Highs: In terms of fun and straight up º ³ ³º memorability...it gets no better. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Lows: If cheeky lyrical content, large egos, and º ³ ³º trolling are not your thing....beware. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Bottom line: Grab your popcorn and watch the º ³ ³º latest episode of "Space Police."
