Ί ³ ³Ί Album : The Purple Album Label : Frontiers Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί With the addition of Night Ranger/Trans-Siberian Ί ³ ³Ί Orchestra guitarist Joel Hoekstra in 2014 to Ί ³ ³Ί replace the departed Doug Aldrich, the Ί ³ ³Ί Whitesnake line-up was once again complete, and Ί ³ ³Ί the band was quick to get back into the studio Ί ³ ³Ί to crank out another album. Instead of a new Ί ³ ³Ί platter of original material, David Coverdale Ί ³ ³Ί instead decided to take a look back at his time Ί ³ ³Ί with Deep Purple, and revisit some of those Ί ³ ³Ί classics from the Burn, Stormbringer, and Come Ί ³ ³Ί Taste the Band albums. Along with Reb Beach Ί ³ ³Ί (guitar), Michael Devin (bass), Tommy Aldridge Ί ³ ³Ί (drums), and Brian Ruedy (keyboards), the band Ί ³ ³Ί have put together a loving tribute to some truly Ί ³ ³Ί monumental songs, with the plan to tour the Ί ³ ³Ί world not only playing Whitesnake classics, but Ί ³ ³Ί many of these Deep Purple gems, most of which Ί ³ ³Ί haven't been played in concert by any Purple Ί ³ ³Ί family line-up in decades. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The first question many are probably asking, is Ί ³ ³Ί why make this album at all? Well, speaking as a Ί ³ ³Ί massive Deep Purple fan, it's about time someone Ί ³ ³Ί resurrected these old classics, and who better Ί ³ ³Ί than David Coverdale and Co. ? The second Ί ³ ³Ί question, the originals featured the vocal team Ί ³ ³Ί of Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, so who is going Ί ³ ³Ί to take over Hughes' parts if he is not involved Ί ³ ³Ί in the album? That part seems to have been Ί ³ ³Ί filled by a combination of Beach, Hoekstra, Ί ³ ³Ί Devin, and Ruedy, all of whom do a fantastic job Ί ³ ³Ί here recreating the soulful style of Hughes. And Ί ³ ³Ί how about Mr. Coverdale...is he up for the Ί ³ ³Ί challenge? Well, quite frankly he sounds Ί ³ ³Ί fabulous here, and right at home on these songs, Ί ³ ³Ί the majority of which he hasn't sang since the Ί ³ ³Ί '70s. Sure, "Burn", "Stormbringer", and Ί ³ ³Ί "Mistreated" were included in many live Ί ³ ³Ί Whitesnake sets over the years, but in total Ί ³ ³Ί much of what you'll hear on The Purple Album Ί ³ ³Ί will be tunes that the singer is revisiting for Ί ³ ³Ί the first time in ages. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί "Burn" kicks off the album, with Hoekstra and Ί ³ ³Ί Beach proving to be a formidable guitar team, Ί ³ ³Ί Aldridge pounding the skins like a madman, Ruedy Ί ³ ³Ί delivering a tasty keyboard solo, and Coverdale Ί ³ ³Ί shrieking as if he was a young man again. The Ί ³ ³Ί layers of vocals come out on a funky but heavy Ί ³ ³Ί take on "You Fool No One", and again, I'm not Ί ³ ³Ί sure exactly who is contributing Hughes' parts, Ί ³ ³Ί but they have done a fantastic job. The soulful Ί ³ ³Ί hard funk of "Love Child" is cranked up a notch, Ί ³ ³Ί this version even heavier than the original, and Ί ³ ³Ί "Sail Away" here is done acoustic style, and is Ί ³ ³Ί a revelation, as the band completely transforms Ί ³ ³Ί this one, Coverdale soaring to the heavens in Ί ³ ³Ί one of his many highlights here. "The Gypsy" is Ί ³ ³Ί also a major success, one of this writer's Ί ³ ³Ί favorites from this era of Purple, and the band Ί ³ ³Ί do it justice, with sizzling lead guitars flying Ί ³ ³Ί about the mix and more of those great dual vocal Ί ³ ³Ί melodies. "Lady Double Dealer" is given royal Ί ³ ³Ί heavy metal treatment, as Coverdale delivers a Ί ³ ³Ί nasty, venomous lead vocal, but he does an about Ί ³ ³Ί face and shows us just how much he has left on a Ί ³ ³Ί killer, bluesy version of "Mistreated", easily Ί ³ ³Ί the most successful song here and one that I Ί ³ ³Ί can't wait to hear live. The guitar solo is also Ί ³ ³Ί monumental, with a nod to Ritchie Blackmore but Ί ³ ³Ί not overly so. A strange choice for this album Ί ³ ³Ί is "Holy Man", which originally was a vehicle Ί ³ ³Ί for Glenn Hughes but Coverdale does a fine job Ί ³ ³Ί making it his own. The band lays down some Ί ³ ³Ί serious funk on "Might Just Take Your Life", and Ί ³ ³Ί then wows on the emotional "You Keep on Moving", Ί ³ ³Ί a powerful tune that is breathtaking here. The Ί ³ ³Ί gentle "Soldier of Fortune" is beautiful, as Ί ³ ³Ί Coverdale croons with his soft, mid-range tone, Ί ³ ³Ί and "Lay Down Stay Down" is locked and loaded, Ί ³ ³Ί the rhythms firing on all cylinders, the guitars Ί ³ ³Ί acrobatic, and the vocals sizzling. The Ί ³ ³Ί legendary "Stormbringer" closes out the set in Ί ³ ³Ί metallic fashion, a much heavier version than Ί ³ ³Ί the original that sees Hoekstra & Beach working Ί ³ ³Ί overtime. The deluxe edition also includes Ί ³ ³Ί "Comin' Home" and "Lady Luck", but these tracks Ί ³ ³Ί were not available for review. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Whether Coverdale's voice can handle belting Ί ³ ³Ί these tunes out on the upcoming tour remains to Ί ³ ³Ί be seen, but I think he's up for the challenge. Ί ³ ³Ί He's assembled a fine cast of musicians here who Ί ³ ³Ί can not only recreate all the instrumental parts Ί ³ ³Ί and add in their own identity, but also Ί ³ ³Ί contribute stellar vocals as well to help him Ί ³ ³Ί bring these songs back to life. Thankfully, the Ί ³ ³Ί band decided to give many of these songs a Ί ³ ³Ί slightly different spin, so it's not a 'note for Ί ³ ³Ί note' covers album, but a 'reimagining' so to Ί ³ ³Ί speak. It should prove to be an exciting tour, Ί ³ ³Ί and hopefully it prompts the band to get back in Ί ³ ³Ί the studio once it's over and crank out another Ί ³ ³Ί new album of all original material. In the Ί ³ ³Ί meantime, get 'yer Purple on!
