Ί ³ ³Ί Album : Poetry For The Poisoned (LimitLabel : Ear Music Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Kamelot is another one of those bands that has Ί ³ ³Ί gotten a lot of respect in the power metal scene Ί ³ ³Ί for their balance of adventurous Ί ³ ³Ί experimentations and great songwriting skills. Ί ³ ³Ί 2007's Ghost Opera continued this trend, though Ί ³ ³Ί it met minor controversy for seemingly moving Ί ³ ³Ί away from power metal in favor of a more Ί ³ ³Ί electronic/gothic approach. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί In a strange response, the band's ninth studio Ί ³ ³Ί album serves as a further extension of past Ί ³ ³Ί experiments. In addition, it is the first Ί ³ ³Ί Kamelot album to feature original Sean Tibbetts, Ί ³ ³Ί who had left the band during its early years but Ί ³ ³Ί has recently returned to replace his old Ί ³ ³Ί replacement Glenn Barry. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί As previously mentioned, this is easily the Ί ³ ³Ί band's most experimental album to date and may Ί ³ ³Ί be rather difficult to classify as a power metal Ί ³ ³Ί album. There are still a few familiar moments of Ί ³ ³Ί this nature on tracks such as If Tomorrow Came Ί ³ ³Ί and Once Upon a Time, but even these only seem Ί ³ ³Ί to last for rather short periods of time and Ί ³ ³Ί soon way to slower flourishes. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Instead, the gothic elements of the past few Ί ³ ³Ί albums have been expanded even more as songs are Ί ³ ³Ί built around mid-tempo riffs, memorable Ί ³ ³Ί choruses, and dark atmospheres. Of these tracks, Ί ³ ³Ί opener and leading single The Great Pandemonium Ί ³ ³Ί is the most memorable thanks to its bass driven Ί ³ ³Ί verses, infectious chorus, and liberal use of Ί ³ ³Ί harsh and whispered vocals. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Also worth noting are the slower tracks such as Ί ³ ³Ί House On A Hill as well as the epic title song Ί ³ ³Ί that spans over four separate tracks. The Ί ³ ³Ί latter's divisions are somewhat unnecessary in Ί ³ ³Ί comparison to the band's previous suites, but Ί ³ ³Ί they do not detract from this particular suite's Ί ³ ³Ί quality. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Despite the changes that have been implemented, Ί ³ ³Ί the album's actual overall structure doesn't Ί ³ ³Ί stray too far from past efforts. The Great Ί ³ ³Ί Pandemonium recalls a cross between March of Ί ³ ³Ί Mephisto and Rule the World, If Tomorrow Came Ί ³ ³Ί plays out like a more electronic version of Ί ³ ³Ί Ghost Opera's title track, the Poetry for the Ί ³ ³Ί Poisoned suite reminds one of Momento Mori and Ί ³ ³Ί the Elizabeth trilogy from Karma, and the Ί ³ ³Ί closing Once Upon A Time is a more toned down Ί ³ ³Ί version of Serenade and Eden Echo. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί While the structure may lead some listeners to Ί ³ ³Ί wonder if the band is merely repeating Ί ³ ³Ί themselves, the use of this familiar motif does Ί ³ ³Ί help to make some of the more unconventional Ί ³ ³Ί elements easier to digest. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί With all this going on, the band puts on an Ί ³ ³Ί overall competent performance. The various Ί ³ ³Ί keyboards and sound effects provide a great deal Ί ³ ³Ί of atmosphere without getting in the way of the Ί ³ ³Ί other instruments and the rhythm section gets Ί ³ ³Ί plenty of chances to shine along the way. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Founding guitarist Thomas Youngblood may be one Ί ³ ³Ί of the band's leading members, but the guitars Ί ³ ³Ί on this album are somewhat underwhelming as they Ί ³ ³Ί are mostly based around mid-tempo chugs and Ί ³ ³Ί fairly simple solos. However, the riffs Ί ³ ³Ί themselves are effectively composed and fit the Ί ³ ³Ί songs better than any faster outbursts would. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί But like all the other Kamelot albums that have Ί ³ ³Ί come out since Siege Perilous, vocalist Roy Khan Ί ³ ³Ί is the band's strongest member and carries the Ί ³ ³Ί songs well with his commanding presence. He also Ί ³ ³Ί shows a lot of variety as he whispers, wails, Ί ³ ³Ί croons and processes his voice to great effect. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Speaking of vocalists, this album follows the Ί ³ ³Ί tradition of recent Kamelot albums featuring a Ί ³ ³Ί great slew of guest performers. In addition to Ί ³ ³Ί the expected contributions by the talented Ί ³ ³Ί Simone Simmons of Epica, we also see some Ί ³ ³Ί appearances from other great figures in the Ί ³ ³Ί power and extreme metal genres. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Of all these appearances, the contribution made Ί ³ ³Ί by Jon Oliva of Savatage on The Zodiac is the Ί ³ ³Ί most exciting as the song is greatly Ί ³ ³Ί strengthened by his demonic snarls. The cameo Ί ³ ³Ί appearance by Bjorn Strid of Soilwork on The Ί ³ ³Ί Great Pandemonium is pretty cool as it echoes Ί ³ ³Ί the March of Mephisto's sentiments quite nicely. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί In a way similar to Iron Maiden's recent Ί ³ ³Ί material, this is an album that may be a little Ί ³ ³Ί harder to get into than previous Kamelot Ί ³ ³Ί releases overall and has potential to be an even Ί ³ ³Ί controversial effort than Ghost Opera. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί It is hard to say where it can placed in the Ί ³ ³Ί band's overall discography, but it is another Ί ³ ³Ί great release that continues the band's tendency Ί ³ ³Ί to intrigue, confuse, and ultimately satisfy Ί ³ ³Ί listeners of various genres. But for the Ί ³ ³Ί unfamiliar listener, I would highly recommend Ί ³ ³Ί checking out The Black Halo before going here.
