Eight albums have been Ί ³ ³Ί published in total, mainly from 80's era. Some Ί ³ ³Ί of them content rare, outtakes or previously Ί ³ ³Ί unreleased songs as bonus tracks. Additionally, Ί ³ ³Ί some of the CD editions are accompanied by a DVD Ί ³ ³Ί with TV appearances, video-clips and or the band Ί ³ ³Ί talking about the making of the album. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The CD of this deluxe edition has six bouns Ί ³ ³Ί tracks, 5 demos and one cover of The Who. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The DVD includes the promo clips of the album, a Ί ³ ³Ί documentary with band members telling how it was Ί ³ ³Ί made and a documentary with live performances of Ί ³ ³Ί the band in their first tour into the URRS. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί ------------------------------------------------ Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Scorpions were at the top of their career by the Ί ³ ³Ί late 80’s Their hits were on radio and TV, their Ί ³ ³Ί stadium massive shows were sold out and their Ί ³ ³Ί popularity and fame were tremendous. It must Ί ³ ³Ί have been such a serious challenge to make Ί ³ ³Ί another great album, right after a true Ί ³ ³Ί successful classic like “Love At First Sting”. Ί ³ ³Ί No matter what the result of the following Ί ³ ³Ί record was, it would be condemned to be ignored Ί ³ ³Ί behind the huge impact of its predecessor. Ί ³ ³Ί That’s what happened with “Savage Amusement”, Ί ³ ³Ί Scorpions 10th studio full-lenght. However, Ί ³ ³Ί Meine and co. Definitely tried their best on it, Ί ³ ³Ί under the pressure of their record label and the Ί ³ ³Ί commercial common trends of those times. There’s Ί ³ ³Ί some fine moments here that shouldn’t be Ί ³ ³Ί forgotten, though. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Their intentions here are inevitably much more Ί ³ ³Ί commercial, leaving behind their distinctive Ί ³ ³Ί aggression and intensity for a while. The Ί ³ ³Ί current heavy metal sound of those days was Ί ³ ³Ί pretty simple, repetitive, melodic and truly Ί ³ ³Ί polished. Scorpions were forced in some way to Ί ³ ³Ί satisfy the requirements of those years and Ί ³ ³Ί include those elements in ther new compositions, Ί ³ ³Ί making them part of their philosophy. “Walking Ί ³ ³Ί On The Edge” or “Every Minute Everyday” show a Ί ³ ³Ί considerable change from anything they did Ί ³ ³Ί before. Melody has become absolutely Ί ³ ³Ί omnipresent; vocals take now all attention, very Ί ³ ³Ί insistent while instruments are relegated to Ί ³ ³Ί support them rather discreetly. The German Ί ³ ³Ί metallers simplify their methods to keep away Ί ³ ³Ί from their characteristic technique and certain Ί ³ ³Ί complexity to reach people’s ears easier. Their Ί ³ ³Ί commercial attempt on “Media Overkill” or the Ί ³ ³Ί ballad that failed, “Believe In Love”, becomes Ί ³ ³Ί excessively explicit and pretentious. Their Ί ³ ³Ί excellent performance and competent execution Ί ³ ³Ί make their music decent and amusing, but the Ί ³ ³Ί lack of the band’s usual roughness and strength Ί ³ ³Ί keeps it from being memorable. On other hand, Ί ³ ³Ί their formula is working suprisingly at times, Ί ³ ³Ί on “Passion Rules The Game” and “Rhythm Of Ί ³ ³Ί Love”, particularly, whose structures might be Ί ³ ³Ί repetitive and dumb, but their sound exquisite Ί ³ ³Ί and irresistible. The sweet voice of Klaus Ί ³ ³Ί becomes totally seductive once again, along with Ί ³ ³Ί the hypnotizing charming guitar lines. Those Ί ³ ³Ί became instant classics, featuring some Ί ³ ³Ί brilliance left among these wrongly focused Ί ³ ³Ί numbers. More exceptions can be found here, Ί ³ ³Ί luckily. Jabs & Schenker’s impressive harsh Ί ³ ³Ί riffs show no mercy on the devastating “We Let Ί ³ ³Ί It Rock...You Let It Roll” and the terminal Ί ³ ³Ί velocity of the pure speed metal track “Love On Ί ³ ³Ί The Run”. Scorpions couldn’t get rid completely Ί ³ ³Ί of their genuine attitude, power and brutality. Ί ³ ³Ί Those 2 are from the heaviest they ever did. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί During those times of cheesy ballads, MTV Ί ³ ³Ί videoclips and glam clothing fashion, the Ί ³ ³Ί pressure from recorld labels and producers Ί ³ ³Ί became bigger than ever before. Specially, on Ί ³ ³Ί popular legendary groups like these guys. Not Ί ³ ³Ί even Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple or Ί ³ ³Ί Accept, along with many NWOBHM victims of Def Ί ³ ³Ί Leppard influence, could escape from the Ί ³ ³Ί unstoppable destructive trends of those old Ί ³ ³Ί days. Scorpions either, although at least, they Ί ³ ³Ί kept some of their original intentions on this Ί ³ ³Ί album, as those 2 raging metal exceptions I Ί ³ ³Ί mentioned demonstrate. The general pattern here Ί ³ ³Ί goes further into that inoffensive mainstream Ί ³ ³Ί musical path, unfortunately. Guitars have been Ί ³ ³Ί reduced to be background support to the leading Ί ³ ³Ί vocals. The excess of voices and lyrical Ί ³ ³Ί repetition contributes to make these tunes Ί ³ ³Ί absolutely catchy and perfect to sing along. Ί ³ ³Ί Instrumentally mediocre and poorly conceived, Ί ³ ³Ί it’s such a shame they wasted the immense Ί ³ ³Ί potential of a combo of the level of Matthias Ί ³ ³Ί and Rudolf. Their guitars are still amazingly Ί ³ ³Ί merciless, with that violent slashing tone that Ί ³ ³Ί makes me tremble. Unfortunately, the Ί ³ ³Ί overproduced atmosphere and mixing doesn’t give Ί ³ ³Ί the 6 string section the presence and solidity Ί ³ ³Ί they crave. Vocals are what have become the main Ί ³ ³Ί attraction, and Klaus is completely brilliant on Ί ³ ³Ί giving them their appropriate texture, Ί ³ ³Ί modulation and emotion. His voice can be Ί ³ ³Ί touching and soft on the quietest compositions, Ί ³ ³Ί but also crude and wicked on the straighter Ί ³ ³Ί moments here. The song-writing is convincing Ί ³ ³Ί too, each track is well-developed and defined. Ί ³ ³Ί The weak spots are the persisting melody and the Ί ³ ³Ί supremacy of vocals, while this material gets Ί ³ ³Ί stripped down instrumentally. What could have Ί ³ ³Ί been heavy and hard turns into something Ί ³ ³Ί inoffensive, casual. The lyrics have been also Ί ³ ³Ί transformed into something more cheesy, away Ί ³ ³Ί from the group’s usual horny/kinky/explicit cool Ί ³ ³Ί words. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί After all, this is not that bad. Of course, this Ί ³ ³Ί LP is far from the glorious magnificence of Ί ³ ³Ί “Blackout” or “Taken By Force”, but still offers Ί ³ ³Ί totally enjoyable moments and a few fierce metal Ί ³ ³Ί cuts. It’s easy to criticize them for following Ί ³ ³Ί a wrong direction and trying to emulate what Ί ³ ³Ί popular 80’s glam acts were doing. Some had no Ί ³ ³Ί other chance, like most of the NWOBHM Ί ³ ³Ί underground groups that in the end, were dropped Ί ³ ³Ί by their record labels (Atlantic, Capitol, and Ί ³ ³Ί those famous ones). On other hand, those bizarre Ί ³ ³Ί albums give us the chance to listen to the Ί ³ ³Ί classic big of metal doing something alternative Ί ³ ³Ί and different. I enjoyed some of the “Seventh Ί ³ ³Ί Star” numbers by Iommi and guests, a bit of Ί ³ ³Ί Priest’s “Turbo” and Accept’s “Metal Heart” from Ί ³ ³Ί the mid-80’s, and this one provides also Ί ³ ³Ί amusement, as its title suggests.
