Ί ³ ³Ί Album : Monsters Of Rock-Live At DoninLabel : Eagle Vision Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί From our great friends over at Eagle Rock comes Ί ³ ³Ί this wild archival live Rainbow document from Ί ³ ³Ί 1980, when the band, hot on the heels of the Ί ³ ³Ί release of their Down to Earth album, headlined Ί ³ ³Ί the Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Ί ³ ³Ί Donington on April 16th, which also featured Ί ³ ³Ί Judas Priest, Scorpions, April Wine, Saxon, Ί ³ ³Ί Rioit, and Touch. As the one and only album & Ί ³ ³Ί tour to feature lead vocalist Graham Bonnet, it Ί ³ ³Ί also marked the last hurrah for drummer Cozy Ί ³ ³Ί Powell (and in fact this was his last show with Ί ³ ³Ί the band), who left the band to play with the Ί ³ ³Ί Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, and Black Ί ³ ³Ί Sabbath. With a line-up that of course also Ί ³ ³Ί featured lead guitarist extraordinaire Ritchie Ί ³ ³Ί Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, and keyboard Ί ³ ³Ί maestro Don Airey (the latter now both together Ί ³ ³Ί in Deep Purple), the band are in fine form here Ί ³ ³Ί in front of an enormous crowd of pumped up Ί ³ ³Ί metalheads. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Let's start with the good; the CD portion of Ί ³ ³Ί this set looks to feature most of Rainbow's set Ί ³ ³Ί that day at Donington, but with the limitations Ί ³ ³Ί of the format, only about 80 minutes could fit Ί ³ ³Ί onto the disc, so "Man on a Silver Mountain" and Ί ³ ³Ί "Love's No Friend" have been omitted, which is Ί ³ ³Ί kind of a shame, instead giving way to a lot of Ί ³ ³Ί solos and jamming. However, there are KILLER Ί ³ ³Ί renditions of "Eyes of the World", "Stargazer", Ί ³ ³Ί "Catch the Rainbow", and "All Night Long", which Ί ³ ³Ί sees Bonnet, though no Ronnie James Dio, in fine Ί ³ ³Ί form. He especially handles the Dio era material Ί ³ ³Ί quite well, and appears to be having an alcohol Ί ³ ³Ί fueled blast on the closer "Long Live Rock 'n' Ί ³ ³Ί Roll". In fact, he no doubt was having the time Ί ³ ³Ί of his life here, playing in front of the Ί ³ ³Ί largest crowd of his career, and his between Ί ³ ³Ί song banter seemed like he was probably feeling Ί ³ ³Ί no pain from all the pre-show partying he was no Ί ³ ³Ί doubt partaking in. Blackmore lends his always Ί ³ ³Ί masterful talents throughout, delivering some Ί ³ ³Ί scorching guitar work on "Difficult to Cure", Ί ³ ³Ί "Lost in Hollywood" and of course "Catch the Ί ³ ³Ί Rainbow". Powell and Airey also get plenty of Ί ³ ³Ί room to shine here, especially the departing Ί ³ ³Ί Cozy, who thunders along with incredible Ί ³ ³Ί precision, and was certainly missed in this band Ί ³ ³Ί going forward, but with their direction into Ί ³ ³Ί more commercial waters he wanted to continue to Ί ³ ³Ί rock out, and did so elsewhere. The sound Ί ³ ³Ί quality of the CD is decent, and like I Ί ³ ³Ί mentioned, other than the omission of a few Ί ³ ³Ί tracks, it's a very good live Rainbow album from Ί ³ ³Ί an often forgotten era of the bands history. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Now, the DVD is another story. At just less than Ί ³ ³Ί 30 minutes, it's basically a drastically edited Ί ³ ³Ί down version of the show, with snippets of a few Ί ³ ³Ί songs, all out of order and with middling video Ί ³ ³Ί quality. I'm not sure if the whole concert was Ί ³ ³Ί filmed, or if not much has survived the years, Ί ³ ³Ί but overall it's pretty unsatisfying, regardless Ί ³ ³Ί of how good it is to see this version of the Ί ³ ³Ί band in this format. Surprisingly, their cover Ί ³ ³Ί of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" is very strong, Ί ³ ³Ί and here in it's entirety, but "Catch the Ί ³ ³Ί Rainbow" is cut in half, as is "Eyes of the Ί ³ ³Ί World", and "Stargazer", "Since You've Been Ί ³ ³Ί Gone", and "Lost in Hollywood" are nowhere to be Ί ³ ³Ί found. Whether we see more from this concert Ί ³ ³Ί released in the future remains to be seen, but Ί ³ ³Ί as fun as it is to see the roughly 25 minutes of Ί ³ ³Ί this show here, you will be left longing for Ί ³ ³Ί more. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Despite that, it's hard to look at this as Ί ³ ³Ί anything but a winner, as the Bonnet era of Ί ³ ³Ί Rainbow often gets overlooked by the superior Ί ³ ³Ί Dio years and the more commercial Joe Lynn Ί ³ ³Ί Turner version of the band. If you are a Rainbow Ί ³ ³Ί fan, you are going to need this in your Ί ³ ³Ί collection, just keep your expectations in check Ί ³ ³Ί a little bit.
