They have been widely influential, both over their contemporaries and with later acts. Q included John McKay's guitar playing on "Hong Kong Garden" in their list of "100 Greatest Guitar Tracks Ever", while Mojo rated guitarist John McGeoch in their list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" for his work on "Spellbound". The Times cited the group as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era". The band experienced several line-up changes, with Siouxsie and Severin being the only constant members. They disbanded in 1996, with Siouxsie and drummer Budgie continuing to record music as the Creatures, a second band they had formed in the early 1980s. In 2004, Siouxsie began a solo career. Siouxsie and the Banshees have been described as developing "a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation". The Times wrote that "The Banshees stand proudly [... as] one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era". With some of their darkest material, the band also helped spawn the gothic scene. The album was recorded during August 1978 at the RAK studios in London, with the still rookie producer Steve Lillywhite at the controls. With the classic early Banshees line up of Sioux, Severin, Morris and McKay it used art school sensibilities and reference points to make one of the most influential albums of the post punk era. The finished album sounded like nothing else. Drawing from a darker emotional and musical palette, the Banshees introduced themselves with an altogether more foreboding presence than their contemporaries. The opening bars of The Scream features Severins sliding bass, McKays spacious guitar, and eventually the booming, almost war-like drums of Morris, as Siouxsies distant wails make their first dramatic entrance. The doubled layered vocals hint more at schizophrenia than harmony, and the tom heavy drums on the album are often referred to in reviews as being motorik. The Scream is one of those era defining albums that still sounds relevant today, and stands as a testament to Siouxsie and the Banshees fearless singularity. Without it we wonder, would we have had any of those follow on post punk bands with their own legacy of influence. Bands like Joy Division, The Cocteau Twins, Soft Cell, or any mid period miserable Cure?
