The Maytals were formed in the early 1960s and were key figures in popularizing reggae music. Frontman Toots Hibbert's soulful vocal style has been compared to Otis Redding, and led him to be named one of the 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone. Their 1968 single "Do the Reggay", was the first song to use the word "reggae", naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. As Island Records founder Chris Blackwell says, "The Maytals were unlike anything else ... sensational, raw and dynamic." I don't know the story behind this album, but the basic tracks for all the songs except "If You Act This Way", "Come Reggay", "The Same Thing" and "Collie Baby" ended up in their final, better-known versions on Funky Kingston. Funky Kingston took those tracks, added "Sit Right Down", "I Can't Believe" and "Funky Kingston", and changed the mix for the tracks they imported. "Pomps and Pride" is a much more brass-heavy song in this version for instance, and "Louie Louie" is much shorter than the 5 min version released the next year. That said, this gives a more stripped-down feel to the songs - you can hear Toots' singing and all the instruments more clearly - more distinct.
