With Gamble & Huff, the O'Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with "Back Stabbers" (1972), and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 the following year with "Love Train". Several other US R&B hits followed, and the O'Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013. Listening to "Little Brother" you'd get the impression that The O'Jays never left Ohio. Walter Williams sounds like he's reminiscing from his porch in Canton. On "Just To Be With You" Eddie LeVert is front and center on this up beat groove that reminds one of Mel & Tim's "Backfield In Motion" tempo-wise and hints of what's to come once the group hits the Sigma studios in South Philly with the strings squealing out an urgent backround appeal and the drummer doubling and tripling up on the snares down front. "Crossworlds Of Life" sounds more like a Windy City groove thang with an insistant whistling organ, a rhythmic guitar and some sister soul in the backups early on before the trio, lead by Eddie, bring their harmony into the mix. "Peace" gives us our first taste from one of the lesser known voices, reminding us of Eddie Kendricks for a moment. The rhythm picks up into a "Hair/Godspell" like revival, appealing for the world to find love and peace. Super Bad is a very likeable album, finding a little bit for everyone.
