Wakeman's Solokarriere begann 1973. Seine erfolgreichsten Platten sind The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973), Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974) und The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (1975). Er hat mehr als 100 Soloalben produziert und mehr als 50 Millionen Platten verkauft. Borne out of his The Yes Suite, a medley incorporating themes from Yes classics, the Yessonata medley followed quickly, comprising more than 30 musical pieces stitched together elegantly and seamlessly. Equally good is the flip-side, The King Arthur Piano Suite, another singularly lovely, one-man take on the main themes and melodies from his The Knights Of The Round Table.
