Gründer und Lead Vocalist Charlie Harper spielte in R & B- und Pub-Rock-Gruppen, bevor er von Bands wie The Damned beeinflusst wurde, um sich Punk zuzuwenden. Ihr Sound war Sham 69 oder The Angelic Upstarts am ähnlichsten, allerdings ohne den folgenden Skinhead. Die UK Subs sind die einzige Band, die ein Album für jeden Buchstaben des Alphabets in Auftrag gibt und 2016 Z (Ziezo) erreicht. The fifth UK Subs studio album, from 1983, remastered 2024. The album came at a crossroads for the UK Subs. Punk had become unfashionable, and the early line-ups had split leaving Charlie Harper to form a new band. He enlisted early Subs bassist Steve Slack (who'd left before their first recordings, replaced by his brother), drummer Steve Jones and guitarist Captain Scarlet. Navigating between the UK Subs punk ethos and wider accessible music, with many songs co-written by Slack and Scarlet, Charlie's lyrics reflected the current political paranoia of an Orwellian future, alongside hedonistic punk tales of life lived and characters met along the road.
